What it is.
Alpha-lipoic acid is a small molecule that contains sulphur. Our body makes it itself.
How little of it there is in tissue shows in its history. In 1951 the American scientist Lester Reed worked through about 10 tonnes of beef liver to collect the first 30 milligrams.
It exists in two mirror forms, R and S. Only the R form occurs in nature. Industrial production usually gives a 50/50 mix, and that mix is what most supplements contain.
