What it is.
Berberine is a yellow substance that the barberry stores in its roots and bark. It tastes very bitter.
The yellow is so strong that for centuries the roots were used to dye wool and leather. Cut the root and the core is bright yellow: that is the berberine itself.
Berberine and barberry extract are not the same thing. The extract comes from the whole root and carries the berberine together with the rest of the plant. So on a label, check exactly what it says: "root extract" or "berberine".
