What it is.
Maca is a root vegetable from the cabbage and radish family. It thrives where almost nothing else grows: on the cold high plains of the Andes.
In Peru it has been farmed for at least two thousand years and eaten as food: boiled, baked or ground into flour for porridge and drinks. There it is an everyday food, not a supplement.
For supplements the root is dried and ground into a powder.
